grape sized tamerind/tamerind paste/1/2 lemon/1/2 tsp of dry mango powder/1/2 tsp of prunes powder
1/2 tsp of urad dal
Step 1: First, take a cup of thoor dal in a bowl , wash it once thoroughly.
Step 2: Add water to the thoor dal so that the dal is soaked and water is little more than the dal level.
Step 3: Now add chopped oninons, chopped tomatoes, crushed garlic flakes, 1 green chilly slit into halves, curry leaves, 1 tsp of cumin seeds, 1/4 tsp of asafoetida , 1/2tsp of turmeric powder.
Step 4: Now pressure cook the mixed ingredients for 5 whistles.
Step 5: After the pressure from the cooker is down, open and remove the cooked dal. Now its ready for seasoning.Keep all the seasoning ingredients at hand's reach.
You need to heat little cooking oil or ghee (tastes good) then season mustard followed by urad dal, cumin seeds and pinch of asafoetida. Then add red chillies, finely sliced green chillies, curry leaves and finely chopped ginger.Season it in medium heat for few seconds, otherwise it will get burnt and does not taste good. The aroma this season gives tempts you to eat more.
Step 6: Now pour the cooked dal into the seasoning and add little bit of cumin powder followed by salt.Allow it to boil for few minutes.
Step 7: Add tamarind water/ paste or lemon juice/dry mango powder/prunes powder to give a little sour taste.Allow the dal to boil for few more minutes. Now its ready to put off and garnish with corriander leaves.
The dish is ready to be served with hot rice and pappad. Here I have served with hot rice, potato chips and half boiled spicy egg.
